Smart ID Cards
We prepare your Smart ID card application, check your supporting documents and book your biometrics appointment at a Home Affairs bank branch. You attend the appointment for your photo and fingerprints, and we keep you updated until the card is ready to collect.
Who it is for
- South African citizens applying for their ID for the first time (from age 16)
- Anyone replacing a lost, stolen or damaged Smart ID card
- Green ID book holders moving to a Smart ID card
- People updating details such as a surname after marriage
Documents usually needed
- Your current ID or green ID book, if you have one
- A birth certificate for a first-time application
- A parent's or guardian's ID for a first-time application
- A police statement (affidavit) if your ID was lost or stolen
- A marriage certificate if your surname is changing
Requirements depend on your situation. We confirm exactly which documents your case needs before anything is submitted.
How it works
- 1Send us your details through the online application form or WhatsApp.
- 2We check your documents and tell you if anything is missing.
- 3We book your biometrics appointment at a Home Affairs bank branch.
- 4You attend the appointment for your photo and fingerprints.
- 5We keep you updated until the card is ready to collect from the same branch.
Biometrics (photo and fingerprints) must be captured in person. Nobody can do that part for you.
Home Affairs bank branches are selected branches of participating banks. Some require you to bank with them; we check this for you.
Common questions
Do I still need to go to Home Affairs or a bank in person?
Yes, for Smart ID cards and passports you must attend once in person so your photo and fingerprints can be captured. We book that appointment at a Home Affairs bank branch for you and make sure your documents are ready before you go.
Which banks offer Home Affairs services?
Selected branches of participating South African banks offer Smart ID and passport services. Some branches only serve their own clients, so we check which branch suits you before booking.
What documents do I need for a Smart ID card?
Usually your current ID or green ID book. A first-time applicant typically needs a birth certificate and a parent's or guardian's ID, and a lost or stolen ID needs a police statement. We confirm the exact list for your case.
How long does an application take?
Home Affairs sets the processing time and we cannot shorten it. What we control is preparation: your application is checked before submission so it is not delayed by missing documents, and you hear from us at least every 3 working days.
Ready when you are.
